Maxima Collapse- A sad week for Riga
It has been a very sad week for Riga, the city I live in. The collapse of Maxima, a popular supermarket in the suburbs of the capital city on Thursday killed around 54 people. There are two main shopping chains here in Riga, Rimmy, and Maxima. Maxima is the cheaper of the two, where you can normally find good deals. The Lithuanian retail chain is located in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Bulgaria. This store had been built in 2011.
Latvian President Andris Bеrzins, the Latvian President has told local broadcaster LTV there will be an investigation, calling the tragedy, a “murder of unprotected people.” A winter garden was been built on-top of the building. According to Russia Today, Latvian ombudsman Juris Janson yesterday said “I think that discussions on liability are unnecessary. The law proves that the state should bear responsibility for such tragedies.”
My heart goes out to all the families who have lost a loved one in this tragedy. This incident will have a huge impact on construction and regulations in Latvia.
In June, Riga Castle went on fire a few hours after builders left the building while working on its reconstruction.
