Hummus and tortilla chips
Hummus is one of the best simple speedy snacks out there. It is a very popular Middle Eastern dip containing chickpeas, lemon juice, olive oil and tahini paste. I first started making hummus when I lived in New York and I have been addicted ever since.
You should add it as a snack to your 2012 diet because it is simple, speedy and healthy.
Just follow these simple speedy steps!
Empty drained and rinsed (one can) chickpeas into a blender with two tablespoons of lemon juice, some garlic granules (or finely chopped garlic), half a cup of water, one tablespoon of tahini, and a quarter cup of olive oil. Add some cumin if you have it! (You can also add a little yoghurt to the mixture instead of using water.) Tahini is one of the core ingredients for the traditional recipes of hummus, but if you don’t like the taste you can leave it out. I also added some black pepper to this hummus. If you want a kick..add some chilli powder, if you want it to be sweet, add a tiny bit of honey!
Tortilla Chips
I usually eat hummus with toasted whole meal pita bread. I forgot to include pita bread on the shopping list this week, so I broke up some left over (frozen) tortilla wraps, placed them on a baking tray, sprinkled the pieces with olive oil, salt and black pepper for 15 minutes until they were looking golden and crispy. I have tasted these before deep-fried and they were delicious but they are still nice and tasty baked in the oven!
I love to make hummus and pitas! My husband and I eat it like crazy. Yum yum yum.
Hummus is awesome! We have a Middle Eastern cafe here that makes their own in-house. Love it with Pita! Good call for a great snack. I’ll have to try making my own sometime.

Always a favorite! Never thought about making my own though – thanks for this —–
That looks delicious!
Great snack, and we love it too! I always have a can of chick peas in the pantry just in case of drop in’s. If you don’t have tahini, old fashioned peanut butter is a good substitute; just make sure it’s the just peanuts type (we make ours fresh at our health food store!) Sometimes we just drizzle a little spiced olive oil on top, it’s pretty and it’s extra tasty too!
Sounds delicious I will give it a try sometime…thanks!
I just made hummus today too! I’m posting the recipe tomorrow if you care to take a look – I have a feeling it’s a variety you’ve never seen before! 😉
I am currently experimenting with other recipes for hummus. I plan to put up different variations for hummus in the future. I look forward to seeing yours!
I love your food ideas! Thanks for sharing them.
I have nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award. You can read about the award process on my blog at http://thereinventedlass.wordpress.com/ in the Versatile Blogger post. Congratulations! And thanks for your awesome blog!
Great..thank you! I am glad you are enjoying the blog!
Looks and sounds just wonderful! I recently bought some tahini for another recipe, and I think I’ll make some hummus for the weekend. I love it! 🙂 Debra
This is one of my favourite snacks/starters. Hummus is so easy to make. And with home made tortilla chips, divine. I add a little fresh cream to mine.
And have a look at my French recipes on http://onefrenchword.wordpress.com
No hummus there, it’s not really very French! But lots of other goodies.
Thank you for your blog, it always makes good reading!
Wow we didn’t realize how easy this is to make. Do you have any other uses for tahini? Not sure if college kids will make this if they have to buy it for just one thing.
Hey..you don’t have to use tahini, you can just use some water or use peanut butter as suggested by Eva Taylor (below). I tried that today and it was good! I will think of some other ways to use tahini and will put them up soon!
I did not know that I could do it without the tahini great!!!! Thanks!
In Southern California we enjoy Blue Corn Whale Tails Tortilla Chips infused with ancient Mayan superseed Chia. Tort”chia” Chips with Jalapeño Hummus is amazing and healthy
I adore hummus. I have just been buying the premade stuff in the store. The kind I buy doesn’t have any preservatives in it and it’s really good! I haven’t made my own yet. Can you buy tahini at Walmart or Meijer?
You can make it without tahini. I think the best place to find tahini though is at a health store.
I’ve been using the chickpea water instead of just water in my hummus. Cumin is a great addition. A little parsley and paprika is also great!
Recently I had to make hummus with out Tahini. So instead, I crunched up some sesame seeds and water (kind of making this sesame milk thing), and worked out great!
Love hummus!
I get rid of the water in the can as it smells a little like cat food! I have read on various sites that it is better to drain and rinse. The sesame seeds and water sounds like a good idea instead of tahini though! Also, you can add some yogurt if you like.
Thanks for the recipe 🙂 can’t wait to try this out with my son!
I make hummus often and save some money by using dried chic peas. They only take 20 minutes in a pressure cooker and the cooking water is a nice addition to the hummus.
Hmmm, yes must think of doing that. Do you know I had never owned a pressure cooker till recently! So I often forget to use it.
Love your blog! Will definitely give those chocolate pears a try. Bought myself a Kitchen-Aid food processor this Christmas specifically so I could make my own hummus. Can’t wait to give it a try. Your suggestions for changing it up are interesting — will have to try those, too.
Love Hummus!! I love to eat it with warm pita bread and I pour a little pool of olive oil on top!! You are right about the Tahini-it is definitely a core ingredient and too many people leave it out! booooo! thanks for sharing!!
omg I love hummus 🙂 I am currently getting a recipe together for pumpkin hummus. Although i’ve heard some people have used Yogurt in place of Tahini?
Yes you can do that!
I love hummus, a great snack. For a little different flavor you can add a bit of cooked carrot. It doesn’t add a strong flavor, but a little bit of sweetness and it smooths the texture out even more.
Great idea for a blog, thanks for checking out mine!
Thanks for the tip!
